She was shot dead by the Israeli army in Jenin refugee camp, while Israeli sources said that the reporter was killed by indiscriminate shooting by Palestinian gunmen.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health stated that Abu Aqila died of serious injuries sustained in the head area while covering the Israeli forces' storming of Jenin camp on Wednesday morning.

Al-Jazeera network accused the Israeli soldiers of targeting its correspondent "directly". It quoted eyewitnesses as saying that "a sniper targeted Shireen with a bullet in the face, even though she was wearing a jacket and helmet bearing the logo of the press."

Who is Sherine Abu Aqleh?

Sherine Abu Aqleh was born in January 1971 in Jerusalem, she graduated from the Rosary Sisters School in Beit Hanina in Jerusalem, and holds American citizenship.

She initially studied architecture at the University of Science and Technology in Jordan, then went on to study journalism, where she obtained a BA in Journalism and Media from Yarmouk University of Jordan, and her specialization was in written journalism.

After her graduation, Abu Aqleh returned to the Palestinian territories and worked in several media organizations, including Voice of Palestine Radio and Amman Satellite Channel. Then, in 1997, she moved to work for Al Jazeera satellite channel a year after its launch, where she was one of the first generation of its field correspondents.

Abu Akleh has covered many chapters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the occupied territories for a quarter of a century.

In a previous interview with Al-Jazeera network, Abu Aqleh said that the Israeli authorities have always accused her of photographing security areas, adding that she constantly felt that she was being targeted and that she was facing Israeli army forces and armed settlers.

Abu Aqleh covered the events of the Palestinian Intifada that began in 2000, the Israeli invasion of Jenin and Tulkarm camp in 2002, and the various Israeli raids and military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Abu Aqleh was the first Arab journalist to be allowed into Ashkelon prison in 2005.

She interviewed Palestinian prisoners who were handed long prison sentences by Israeli courts.

Abu Aqila recounted that one of the moments that most affected her was visiting the prison and seeing the conditions of Palestinian prisoners, some of whom spent more than 20 years behind bars.

After the improvement of Qatari-Egyptian relations and allowing Al Jazeera to return to Cairo, Al Jazeera chose Abu Akleh to be the first to open its live broadcasts from there last July.

Her Mission

In a promotional video broadcast by Al Jazeera last October on the occasion of the celebration of its 25th anniversary, Abu Akleh said: "I chose journalism to be close to people. It is not easy, perhaps to change reality, but at least I was able to convey that voice to the world... I am Sherine Abu Aqleh.
